Collective trauma made us need a new sacrifice.

Most likely, you’re a lot like me in that you hadn’t really expected to see the name of Martin Shkreli trending on Twitter in 2020. And, perhaps, also like me, you really didn’t want to see it either. Maybe you also have family and friends who were affected by drug price gouging by people like him, or directly by him, and you also have little sympathy for him. Or maybe, also like me, you were on Twitter before he was sentenced to prison, and you remember his repulsive behavior, particularly towards female journalists.

If you’re like me, you also found…

Did a detox “betray” the body positivity movement?

Anyone who listens to Lizzo’s music or follows her social media channels knows that she marches to the beat of her own drum. For some, when Lizzo arrived on the scene, it was shocking. A big girl twerking in a thong dress at a Lakers’ game? A big girl openly talking about her sexual desires and sexual past?

For many of us, what Lizzo did was liberating. Because skinny girls twerking doesn’t make headlines. Skinny girls talking about their sexual desires don’t make headlines. But when a big girl does, it’s suddenly news.

But Lizzo’s existence is a double-edged sword…

Andrew’s death anxiety is far too timely.

Every night, for the past eight months, death has crossed my mind. As someone who is not religious, my brain has been going into overdrive, trying to figure out what comes next. Is it reincarnation? A heaven or hell? Different layers of purgatory? Or is it just nothing?

Some nights, the overthinking would get the best of me and I’d cry quietly, overwhelmed by the idea that none of us are here for any reason and we’re not owed anything from this world. Perhaps we are truly just born to die.

As the COVID-19 pandemic has raged on, for the…

He said he wouldn’t, and yet here we are.

After four years of my friend mocking Donald Trump and calling him an embarrassment to the Republican party, I started to notice a strange shift. Though I tried to stay off of social media throughout much of the election cycle, I found myself on Twitter a few days before the election. And I found on my feed several retweets from my friend, “calling out liberals” and, above all, condemning President-elect Joe Biden, then not yet President-elect. His new, constant hatred resulted from Biden saying that Roe v. Wade cannot be allowed to be overturned.

This was the same man who…

My dreams haven’t gotten my body positivity memo.

I think it stems from being homesick. Being across the country away from almost everyone I love thanks to this pandemic, it’s hard not to be. I can’t go home and I don’t know when I will be able to again. So home seeps into my dreams a lot.

In my dreams, I’m back in my home state. Except in these dreams, I don’t look like me. It’s (mostly) my face, but it’s basically my face copy and pasted on to a body that looks like a cross between Addison Rae and Jillian Michaels.

In my dreams, I’m back in…

She sacrificed her privacy for mothers everywhere.

We were warned that quarantine would bring about a generation of “quarantine babies.” Although we really ended up seeing higher divorce rates than higher baby rates, we would all be hard-pressed to go a day without hearing about a celebrity baby.

GiGi Hadid and Zayn Malik, Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry, Alec and Hilaria Baldwin, Ed Sheeran and Cherry Seaborn, Chris Pratt and Katherine Schwarzenegger, Nikki Bella and Artem Chigvintsev (Brie Bella had a baby right around the same time!), Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake, and about 76 other couples all gave birth in 2020.

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend…

My alma mater’s lies about sexual assault accountability have long been stale.

Many of us hadn’t experienced it personally, but we heard the whispers. When sexual assault and sexual harassment happened at Emerson College, there was little to be done. Sure, you could report it, but why? When you already knew nothing would happen aside from your own harassment, why would you bother making life harder than it already was? Why bring more pain upon yourself?

Having been sexually assaulted by a man outside of Emerson’s microcosm, I didn’t so much as consider going to my school to talk about it, not even to use the “therapy” programs provided. At the same…

It’s acceptable to refer to a senator as a ‘plaything’ if she’s a woman, right?

It’s impossible to escape this election. Everywhere you look is another reminder we’re up shit’s creek without a paddle. I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t like either candidate. I would venture to say that I hate both of them, although, like a lot of people, I’ll suck it up and do what I know has to be done.

I’ll also be the first to admit I don’t like Joe Biden’s vice presidential pick. I don’t like her “top cop” moniker. I don’t like her history on criminal justice reform. I don’t believe her health care plans are…

Your story doesn’t give you the right to abuse others.

Let’s start with this right off the bat: no one’s story of abuse should ever be downplayed. If you suffered abuse at the hands of anyone, you deserve to be heard. And your story can make a great deal of difference to others, which is why it’s a powerful thing when you choose to share it.

But your story cannot ever overshadow another’s story when you are using your story to advocate for abuse against someone else.

Someone needs to tell JK Rowling that.

JK Rowling’s recent “open letter” is nothing short of a white, cisgender woman using her story to quiet others and advocate for abuse…

Growing up in a conservative town, I finally see a change.

At the age of 7, I was a Girl Scout, like a lot of 7-year-olds. My troop leader was also my soccer coach, basketball coach, and softball coach. In retrospect, I guess it was a pretty small town.

It was around the 4th of July and we were making a bunch of decorations and writing letters to veterans. Politics was always a topic at my house and I remember bringing it up to my friends in the group. I began talking about Bush and how he was hurting the country, ie. probably just repeating what my parents said at the…
